HISTORY OF BUILTH WELLS GOLF CLUB

...our heartiest congratulations...on the excellence of your course...

Builth Wells Golf Club was formed in 1923 when a number of businessmen decided the town needed the facility of a golf course. They formed a company known as 'Builth Wells Golf & General Development Co Ltd' and purchased what was then known as Park Farm.

In March 1923 they built a 9 hole golf course on the site of Park Farm, creating a course with narrow fairways, fearsome rough, and stiles and hedges to negotiate. The farmhouse, a listed building dating back to 1550, was utilised as the clubhouse. At this time the aim was to encourage the involvement of the local community in the playing of the sport.

The club continued in this form until 1965 when it became obvious that the 9 hole course would have difficulty in coping with the needs of members and would soon be inadequate to deal with the increasing volume of visitors.

Shortly after that, the current company of 'Builth Wells Golf Club (1987)' was formed and since this date the club has gone from strength to strength, establishing itself as probably the finest golf course in the Mid Wales area.

The current 18 hole course of 5376 yards, par 66, S.S.S. 67, is built on undulating parkland and utilises the natural characteristics of woodland

On some accuracy off the tee is required rather than distance. Small, well manicured greens encourage accuracy, and the stream running through the centre of the course adds to the number of holes on the back nine.

The clubhouse is a converted 15th century Welsh Long House, with original oak beams and has recently been extended with a Welsh Oak Frame structure, with oak panel flooring which further enhances the facilities thus enabling larger groups and parties. New kitchen and bar facilities, new spike bar area and new patio area are a result of this Welsh Tourist Board part funded development.

The club is very visitor oriented, welcoming societies and parties from a large area, many of whom have become regular annual visitors. Builth Wells, by virtue of its central location, is easily accessible from anywhere in the UK.

Builth Wells Golf Club is a hidden gem in the Mid Wales countryside that must be played to be believed.
